Scrib's racing at Barona Speedway for the years second race of the year. I was forced to leave the track last race after winning the 1st heat race for a family emergency. The family is fine and my point's season got off to a shaky start but I can make that up. I am sponsoring the Pro dwarf point's series this year and have built in passing points for the heats and main events with a full invert every sat night. The winners in the heat races start at the very back and allow for passing points to be gained as we move up. We will only count 10 of 11 races towards the points total so we are not out of it by any means. I pulled a pill that started me at darn near the back of the first heat of 10 cars. One of the cars in my heat race has caused many wrecks in the past and tonight was no exception. He spun out on the start of the race on the front stretch only to take out the car in front of me and forced me to spin to avoid. This car ended up in the fence after taking out the lights in turn one. His night was done and I got to move up 1 row because the car in front of me was now out. I managed to finish 3rd right behind the two cars I consider to be my competition, Eddie Morris and Kevin Drake. All three of us will start at the back tonight and that is good for passing points. When the main event started Eddie made what I thought was a reckless move to pass me only to end in the infield spun out after leaving me no room. The scorers put me at the back as well for even touching him! I was not worried as it was the first lap. Upon restarting again Eddie again was chopping me off to the point of we rubbed tires twice more before I got mad and drove around him and most of the rest of the field on the high side of the track. It seemed I was the only driver running up there and it was very fast and hooked up. I passed three cars at a time in the turns and was the fastest car on the track. The only problem with that was we were on a long green flag run and Tom Clodt was on a runaway and was going to be hard to catch. Kevin managed to steal a spot from on one of the early yellows and was ahead of me but catching the leader. I was coming as well and we were really making up ground on Tom the leader. On the last turn going for the win Kevin managed to pass Tom and win while I finished 3rd for what I considered to be a very fun night of racing. I have to thank my crew Russell, Terry and Adam Jones as well as Mike Leathers for all of the effort they put into this race team. I felt good about my finish tonight and will keep on racing hard until the points all shake out at years end.
Scrib's Racing season started a few weeks ago with the team that includes Russell and Adam Jones and Mike Leathers getting the gear and cars ready for action in 2006. Both my cars were in great shape and needed very little in the way of repair. We were going to Phoenix for the last round of a winter series at two tracks within 10 miles of each other. Canyon Raceway I have raced many times but Arizona Speedway I have never been to before. Bobby Brown, my EEE teammate and I headed east to arrive at Az Speedway Friday evening in order to get a little practice in before Sunday's race. I was very surprised at how nice this place was and it reminded me of the old Barona Speedway from back in the mid 90's. It was a bull ring in size and only 800 feet around .I really like little bull rings as they make for real driver's tracks. I must have put 100 laps on my car Friday night and I really had fun.
Saturday's action began at 1200 noon on sat at the Canyon raceway. There were many classes including 30 modifieds. The Hoosier Dwarfs were dead last in the running order and I always thought that was dangerous for our little cars to follow the big cars. They tear up the track and today was no exception to that. Our track was totally dry and very rough. I managed to win my heat race for our first win in 2006. Bobby also won his heat race and we thought we would start front row together. Unfortunately we totally inverted and we started in 12th spot of 18 cars. Not a place I wanted to start on this very rough track. When the green flag flew Bobby went to the very high side of the track and made great moves to get to 4th right away. I did not fair as well and was held up back in 12th. The race went on with many yellows due to the rough track and I was able to move up to 6th at one point only to hit the wall very hard on the front stretch. I thought I was going upside down but kept it upright and continued on. I was struggling with a bent front end and at the very end of the race I went too high in turn one only to slide off the track and lost two spots to finish 8th. Bobby went on to get 2nd place and we were happy for him. The next day started early as we had repairs to make to the car. The team and I started early and found all the bent parts and replaced them. We went over to a slab of concrete to reset ride heights and put the car right back to being very fast. I drew a pill that started me on pole for the first heat and drove off from the competition to win my second race of 2006 in great fashion. We were fast and felt good about our chances today. Bobby got 2nd in his heat and started second row for the main.
In the heat race I got into a great rhythm and never missed any marks and pulled away but in the main event I messed up within 4 laps, lost my rhythm and lost a spot to fall back to 2nd. On the next restart I tried too hard again to pass back for the lead only to lose another spot. This time however the yellow flag came right out for another car spun and I should have been put back to second. The local car that took my spot was left there and he knew he got away with one. I was racing very mad at this point and could not settle down. I made one more mistake and Bobby got me for third place. Now I know I need to calm down or I will self district. I made myself calm down and started getting into the groove. Bobby, with just a few laps left managed to get by the local racer that stole my spot earlier. I was very anxious to follow him through and with just 2 laps left I passed 3rd place and earned some redemption for the earlier injustice.
Bobby got 2nd and I finished 3rd. Mr. Ed from EEE was pretty happy with the both of us for fighting so hard and we went away happy for our first races of the new season.
I have not been keeping up with the web stories about my racing lately and for that I am sorry. This past sat was my final weekend of racing in 2005 as I have other commitments coming up. This sat past was probably as fun a night as you could have without actually winning. !4 Pro cars showed up and I pulled a terrible pill starting me dead last in the first heat. I found myself driving a bit hard to try and catch up for a bad pill draw and after moving up to 4th spun out all by myself. I was lucky not to get hit while I was spun. I restarted from the back again and was moving up nicely when I spun again! Rather than get the black flag for two spins I just pulled off the track and will start the main dead last tonight. We worked on the car to try and figure out why I was spinning out. I have not spun out on my own for a long time. We made what we thought were the right changes and waited our turn to race. When we got the green flag for the main event I right away was moving up . I was up to 4th place and going to the front when while trying to pass on the outside I spun myself out again! Three spins in one night is not the norm and I was angry at myself. Now I am at the back again but the car is fast and we were not even half way yet so I had time to move up. Just after half way and I was back up to 4th again when I spun AGAIN!!! 4 times in one night,OUCH. This time I got going before the yellow flag flew or I would be out of the main event. So far I have passed more cars going both directions than there were cars. I am at the back for the 3rd time in one main event. With just 6 or 7 laps left I moved up to the high line where nobody else was and made some incredible passes . I was on a mission and was having a blast ! I was even yelling at the cars I passed so loud my helmet fogged up. My buddy Marc was one of the last cars I passed and we really raced hard for that spot. I managed to get him and was now looking at Bobby Brown who was in third. He ran the car too hard into turn 3 and spun himself out giving me the 3rd spot and that is where I finished but was laughing all the way back to the trailer. I want to thank my crew this year and if it was not for them I would not have had near the opportunities to race or finish as well as we did. I only won twice this year but had six 2nd place ,four 3rd 's and a fourth. Not a bad year all in all.
Gas prices have all but forced us to stay close to home and why not? The racing at Barona has been as good as it gets and we have been having lots of fun. After 2 weeks ago when the track inverted the whole field the pro drivers got together and decided there would be no invert from now on. I race the heat race hard and want to win but also it is for good starting spots for the main events. This sat past was no exception as I was able to win my heat race from the 5th spot giving me pole position for the main event. Kevin Drake won his heat race also and he and I had the front row. Tonight's track was a lot drier than it has been so we tightened up our car just a bit as not to be too tight we only made small adjustments. I wish we had of gone more with that adjustment. I think all the cars were caught loose for the race making us pedal more and making it more of a drivers race. I managed to lead only the first lap as Kevin took the lead on lap 2 and never gave it up. I could never get close enough to challenge him. His Brother Brian managed to get me about mid way but I kept fighting for that spot and got it back with one to go and finished second place to Kevin for the 5th time this year! We have a two day show for labor lay and I want very badly to beat Kevin as he seems to be the only car capable of beating me most nights. It is all a matter of getting the setup right for any given night.
Fair Night? Every year at Ventura the County Fair comes to town and the race track has a race for fans that would not normally see a race. The race track seats about 5000 but last night there must have been 7500 people standing anywhere to see what could have been a first race for some. The Dwarfs and the Modifieds were there to put on a show. There was also a Demolition derby that is always a crowd favorite. Bobby Brown and I decided to make the long crappy drive through L.A. to get to Ventura for what I think is the best drivers track anywhere on the west coast.I have had extremely good luck there having won 7 races there. We were lucky enough to have Mike Leathers come with us to crew our cars. He always does a great job keeping our cars looking like a million bucks.Bobby had to pull a pill and start behind every car that had accrued points this year. I went to Ventura in April and won that race giving me points but because I only raced one time there I had the least amount of points and that gave me pole position for the night. That only hurt everybody elses feelings as I was understandably happy about that. I won the heat race by lapping the field and Bobby got second by just inches from winning the race against another good friend Brent Stevens. Brian Saxton won his heat race and that set up the main event line up. I ended on pole while Bobby had to come from 11th spot. Brian has been winning against a group of beginners at Ventura thus he was started 12th. I have raced against Brian many times with the CDCRA club in the past and I knew his abilities and weaknesses. With more than 7000 people watching I took the lead and away we went. Within 3 laps we were already lapping backmarkers. On about lap 5 or 6 Brian trying to pass me could not and then decided to run me over going into the turn and spinning me out from the lead! The crowd booed that action and I was sent to the back of a 21 car field. I was not happy!. I think the promoter knew he was going to get a great show out of that and I was put to the rear of the field. At the drivers meeting we were told if you take out another driver you and the driver spun would go to the back. That did not happen and that is why I question the actions taken and say with a question mark FAIR NIGHT? I was coming out of turn two while the leader was taking the green flag off of turn 4 to restart the race. As I said the real show was about to begin. I passed 7 cars before the flag stand and was on a mission to catch back up to Brian. I have said before racing angry does not work well but tonight I was going for it. Inside of 3 laps I was on Brent's bumper who was in 3rd Bobby Brown was in 2nd but was just a bit tight and could not really catch Brian. I was setting up Brent and he bobbled just enough for me to pass him and now I was on Bobby's bumper looking for a way around him. Bobby has been struggling lately because he keeps messing with his car set up. I reset his car for him before the race and now he was fast again. I was unable to pass Bobby and wound up 3rd for the night and if it was not for being taken out By Brian I had a great time. I have always liked Ventura Raceway and look forward to the day when I meet up with Brian again. Brian was acting pretty cocky around the fans last night and if he ever wants to a true champion he will need to learn how to drive without hitting other cars and take positions he did not earn
Scrib's Racing was at Barona Speedway to do battle with all my friends. We have had bad luck lately and our finishes showed the results. We started the year out with very fast EEE cars right out of the box. We finished second to Kevin Drake 3 times in a row at the start of the season only to go backwards from then on. As it turned out the original setup right out of Mr Ed's EEE was the fast setup. As I was getting second place finishes I was trying anything to get that little extra speed out of the car but I was going the wrong way and making my car too tight to drive thus wearing myself out. I was starting to feel like I was just too old and tired to keep up with those younger racers. I may be old but I can still race with the best of them and this weekend proved exactly that. I pulled a #9 starting pill that had Eddie Morris and I on the front row for heat one. When the race started we were both too tight to turn the cars like they should but managed to finish behind Eddie for 2nd place in the first heat. Eddie pulled a 3 pill for the invert and that moved him back to the 3rd row ,leaving me on the second row outside and allowing Kevin Drake the outside front row for the main event. That was the last thing any of us wanted to have happen as Kevin has been THE ONE TO BEAT!. He has won 6 times this year at our expense. I decided after loosening my car up for the heat race that I had to loosen it up even more. I ended up pretty much right where the car started when I took delivery of it. When the green flag started the Pro Dwarf main event I was right on Kevin's back bumper and he was not getting away from me. About 6 or 7 laps in we were side by side and no touching at all! We have had some really great races together this year.In order to pass cleanly I had to give a little earlier on but as the race went on and Kevin kept pushing out in turn 2 my chance came and I took it. I passed Kevin and took away his line on the high side of the track. The race went Green to Checkered again as it has the last few races. With just the pro's racing each other there have been NO YELLOWS. I have been feeling like my physical condition was not strong enough to beat these guys but not tonight! I held on to win my 36th main event and the team could not have been happier!. There are an awful lot of other racers just as happy to see Kevin lose a race but he has earned every win this year and I hold no ill will towards him. We have actually become much closer as a result of a whole year of clean racing. I have now figured out the key to being the ONE TO BEAT and from now on Kevin will have to beat me to win another race at Barona.
Again Scrib's racing was at Barona Speedway. Since the split of the dwarfs to sportsman and pro dwarfs the pro class has suffered a little for car count. More sportsman show up than do the pro cars and our count has been low teens. That has made for great races and NO yellow flags. The only problem with that no yellow deal is that with an old guy like me, I tend to wear out about 15 laps into the race. This past weekend was no exception. I pulled a terrible pill for the heat race and started in the back. The best I could do was 3rd giving me a 6th place start for the main event. Phil Teixeira in a car he bought from me was on pole after winning his heat race. When the green flew for the one and only time Phil fell back to 2nd but only for a lap or two. David White was outside pole and took the lead briefly. I made very nice moves early to get up to 3rd place. I had a few chances early to get David for second but could not get it done. I ended up finishing 4th Kevin Drake who caught and passed me right at the finish line! Phil went on to win his first main event, congratulations Phil. His car is made by EEE and that made us all happy. I sure want to thank all of the JONES BOYS for all the help on race night.I keep saying how hard it would be without them and I mean it. Thanks guys! We race again this Saturday night and if we get done early enough we will go fishing for the rest of the weekend..Terry you are invited to go!
Barona added one odd date for racing and the dwarfs were on the schedule. Very few cars showed up but 12 pro dwarfs did show and the track was very wet and sticky. I pulled another good pill draw that started me up front for the heat race. I ran so fast that my rear camera showed nobody in the video at the end. I have not lost a heat race yet this year. I wish I could say that about main events as well!. The scorers messed up and inverted the whole field for our main putting all of the fast cars at the very back. With the track so fast and sticky there really was not much difference between all the cars as we ran pretty much wide open and made a very equal field. Bill Groves, who has been running #57 on his car for the last 3-4 years even though I have had that # since the very beginning of the dwarfs in 1994,ended up winning from the outside pole as I was only able to get up to 3rd place. I have been very lucky to have all the Jone's boys as well as "little Leathers" helping mud and prep my car on race night. It makes my job so much easier to race and not have to worry about my car. Thanks to all of you for you assistance.
A regular night of racing and most cars were back to do battle at our local track. Again I pulled a good pill draw for the heats and drove away again to beat all in my heat by 1/2 a track winning another heat race to keep my heat race streak alive. Tonight was heads up racing without an invert and I earned the pole position. The track just got a bunch of new clay and the track was very soft and rough. I took off on the green flag and was getting away pretty good when the yellow flag killed what lead I had built up. I held off the hard charging Kevin Drake for quite a few laps and he tried everything to pass me. About the 15th lap Kevin finally got by me as I was pushing pretty bad and was very tired. His brother Brian even managed to get by me with one to go but the 3 of us were in a race by ourselves as no others were even close. I finished 3rd and am VERY discouraged . If the races were 15 laps I would have won every race this year! I need to be faster at the end of the race but cannot complain too loudly as I am the fastest OLD GUY! We will be back on the 25th.
Again found Scrib's Racing and friends at Barona Speedway . After two second place finishes I was really wanting to win tonight. The speedway inverts the main event either 1-5 rows by pulling a pill and the last two pills were 1 &2 so I thought for sure we were going to be inverted at least 3 rows tonight. We all thought about how we could finish further back to take advantage of that but when the green flag flew I was hard on the gas and won another heat with ease. I have not lost a heat race yet this year.My best friend Marc Teixeira won his heat also and the ever fast Kevin Drake won his heat also. I thought for sure we would end up mid pack with the inversion but somehow there was no inversion and Marc was on pole with me outside pole and Kevin behind Marc. Eddie finished 2nd in my heat and started behind Kevin. The track again was awesome because of Eddie's and Marc's track prep and looked to be very fast tonight. I knew I had to beat Marc into the first turn or fight him for position the rest of the night. He was really trying to keep me in the marbles on the start but I still motored past him to take the lead at the start of the race. Kevin wasted no time passing Marc and the race was on between Kevin and I. I could not tell who was behind me but could hear a car right with me. As it turned out Kevin and I put a half of a lap distance on the rest of the field and were clearly faster than the other guys tonight. My in-car camera was set up for rear view so I have lots of video of Kevin trying everything he could to pass me but for 15 laps I held him off . We had a few yellow flags and one red flag but Kevin and I would put distance on the field every time. After the last yellow and in turn 4 I pushed out a little and Kevin got by me only to have the yellow come out right away. I should have been given my spot back! I knew it and Kevin knew it. Too bad the scorers saw it differently and let Kevin keep the lead. On the same 1/2 lap Bobby Brown passed Marc only to have to give it back but I got ripped off and now I am angry at the way things are going. On the next restart I followed Kevin and raced angry giving him a slight advantage as he started to pull away. I talked myself into calming down and changed my line and I caught right back up to Kevin as the white flag came out. I was right with him going into the last lap. I could see a lapped car was going to be a factor on the last lap as I hoped to use the car as a pick and block Kevin behind him. My plan was working as Kevin was held up slightly going into turn 3. I moved low and had Kevin passed as the Checkered flag was in the air waiting for us. The lapper saw the checkered flag and moved down instead of holding his line and ended up blocking me for the run to the flag stand . Kevin and I were no more than 6 inches apart at the finish and UNFORTUNEATELY I was scored second again for the third week in a row! Needless to say I was pretty sad about the way things went down but I must say the racing has been great! . All I can do is go back next time and try to win again.
All of my racing friends were together for the second race of Barona's season. After coming in 2nd last race I really wanted to find a little more speed so I chose to run my other car with the zx1200 in it. It does have just a bit more power than the little zx1000 but it gives up some extra weight. With 36 cars showing up the promoters at our request finally split the dwarf class into pro and sportsman. It has been coming for a long time and it really is better for newcomers to be able to race against racers with similar talent instead of racing guys like me with over 10 years experience. This proved to be interesting as I saw two of the wildest flips I have seen in some time. Both cars were bent pretty good and in one case the driver had to be cut from his car and hauled off in an ambulance. As of this date I have not heard how he is. I pulled another good pill draw starting me in the third heat on the pole. Eddie Morris had won the first heat ,Kevin Drake won the second heat and I won the third heat. Ed then pulled a no invert pill to start us three guys heads up. Ed on pole ,Kevin outside pole and me inside second row. Phil Teixeira was outside of me in my old zx1200 car that he purchased last year from me.The green flag flew and I right away moved to the outside line thinking it was faster. I sort of pinched Phil on the start but did not mean to as you cannot see behind at all in our dwarfs. He managed to give me a little room and I passed Kevin on the first lap. Ed was looking strong up front and now I set my sights on him. I slid up just a bit a few laps later and lost the spot back to Kevin and his Brother Brian. I had been side by side with Brian in the heat race more than once and now again in the main event. I managed to pass Brian back only to have to give him his spot back when the yellow flag came out right after. The green was back out and I wasted no time passing Brian back and this time for good. Kevin was working Eddie and when he made the pass Ed seemed to try even harder and might have overdriven his car a bit and ended up spinning out and going to the back of the pack. Just like two weeks ago Kevin in the lead and me in second trying everything I could think of to get around Kevin. Both of us were loose and were pedaling the cars to get bite off the corner. We ended up finishing in second again for the second week in a row!. I hate second place and my wife even said I should not complain about second place but I come to WIN and second place will never satisfy me. I will not miss the set up on my car again next week as the track seems to be going dry no matter how wet it looks. I want to thank Russell and Terry Jones as well as Terry's son Adam and his friend Leathers for the help they gave me on race night. I could not race at level of competition I do without them.We will be back at Barona on the 28th of May and would like to invite you all up to see some of the best Dwarf racing you will see in a long time.It is also much less expensive to drive 15 miles instead of traveling all over the state to go racing.
Opening night for Barona Speedway and 39 dwarf cars as well as 90 other cars showed up to race at what I think is one of the most fun little tracks anywhere. Scrib's Racing was very ready as we have already raced 3 races this year and knew just how fast my new EEE car is . I pulled a 2 pill draw starting me on the pole for the first heat race. I had my camera set to look out the back and even with that the other cars were not even in the picture as I won heat one with ease and set the tone for the night's action. It was up to me to pull the invert pill to set up the main event line up and I pulled another 2 ! This inverted the field by two rows and gave Bobby Brown the pole and Kevin Drake the outside pole. I was set in the 4th spot. The track was under water just two days earlier as a late storm blew in and almost ruined the weekend for everybody. If it were not for Eddie Morris and Marc Teixeira and all the other volunteers that worked so hard all day Friday and Saturday we would not been able to play at all. As it turned out the track was sticky all night and what fun that is. The green flag flew for the 20 cars that made the show and right away my friend Marc tried an inside pass from 4 rows back only to bend my upper shock mount and his steering arm. My car was a little off and I fell to 5th . Marc had even more trouble as his car was very towed out making it hard to drive. It took me about 3 laps to figure out how to drive my car with it's new set up after the collision. Soon thereafter I was on the move and passed Bobby and Eddie and Steve Nordberg and I was now in 2nd place. Kevin Drake was my only focus and I wanted to pass him very badly. Kevin did not make any mistakes and held the high line the whole race. I was unable to gain enough momentum on the bottom or middle line to pass him. I tried many times but he prevailed and we had to settle for second tonight. I must say at one point I had come along side of Kevin but I would have had to take him out by pinching him and I thought better of that move knowing we have allot of races ahead together. When we all pulled into tech there were allot of hugs and congratulations going around for what turned out to be a very fun evening. I am really looking forward to going back in two weeks.
Scrib's Racing was at the 1st round of the Western States Dwarf Car Nationals In Pahrump ,Nevada .The event is the 7th annual and hosted by the Southern Nevada Dwarf car club. The event is always the biggest purse of the year as well as always the best food and facilities for the 80 plus cars and our family's.This weekend's weather could not have been better and I thought the racing was fantastic. Our team ,including my old friend Ronnie Romaine and equally as old a friend Russell Jones were very ready for this years Nationals. Our race hauler was fully stocked and organized for the out of town events such as the Nationals and with Ronnie driving the big rig I was able to drive the motor home and take my lovely wife Laurie and our new son Anthony along as well. We arrived somewhat behind schedule as we were totally held up at Rainbow scales for almost 2 hours while they tried to find something wrong with the rig. After all that time and much discussion they finally let us on our way with a fix-it ticket for one brake adjustment! We arrived after all the Thursday mud packing and were able to unload the cars and run hot laps right away. I decided to try the new ZX10 car and was very pleased with it's performance . My lap times were as fast or faster than anybody there and I was very happy with that little motor. We pull pills for heat race lineups and I pulled 41 which gave me a second row start in heat 5. I easily won that heat and was very confident my car was ready the "a" main event tonight. The pill that determines the inversion for the night even went my way and I ended up on pole for the "a" main event . All that matters on friday night is you make top ten and get locked into Saturdays main event right away but I want to win every race that I am part of so my goal was to win on Friday night like I did two years ago. The track was pretty good by the time I got to race even though there was an "e" main and allot of cars on the track .I right away took the lead and ran the high line around for just better than half way though when an old competitor and friend Ron Williams was able to run me down on the bottom of the track and took the lead away briefly. The reason I say briefly is on the second lap he was leading I dropped in behind him on the bottom groove coming off of turn two and when I did he either broke loose or his foot came off the pedal or I just got a huge run on him because I ran right into the back of him and he spun off into the infield losing the lead. I never hit anybody with intention but you can well imagine he thought I did it on purpose and created a huge stink on the track and off the track. The track officials saw what I saw and he was put to the back of the pack further aggravating him. This race must have had 20 yellow flags throughout the race and leading a race with that many restarts is very unnerving as on a late restart Howie Ross ,the 4 time National champ got by me and took the lead. Howie would never give an inch on the bottom so I ran back up top and was almost past him for the lead and another yellow came out and ruined any chance to pass him. Howie went on to win and my friend Brad from Arizona took second away from me right at the end but I was very happy with a 3rd place finish and more importantly top ten and an automatic seed in the big show on Saturday. My crew was able to relax on Saturday and just do normal maintenance for Saturday's race. The top ten pull pills in the order you finished on friday and I pulled 4 . The Fast dash started and Ron Williams, who managed to make it into top ten on friday night even after being put to the back ,was right in front of me . I was faster than he for the dash but he did not like me trying to pass him and he spun me out in the dash! .I just got back in line and fought back to 8th starting me 4 rows outside for the "a" main. I started the main event 8th and with all those fast guys in front of me I knew I had to try the high line in order to go where they were not .I tried that line but fell back to 14th or so before fighting my way back to the bottom line on the "one groove" track we had. I managed to pass all the guys that got by me earlier and moved up to finish 6th for the third year in a row!!!! I have started 1st,24th and now 8th with three different cars and still ended up 6th at pahrump again!Next we will race at Barona speedway on the 30th of this month for the season opener.
Scrib's Racing has new life back after taking most of last year off. My old friend Ron Romaine joined Russell Jones and myself for what looks to be a very good year. Ron also can drive a big rig taking pressure off of me to drive all the time. The team worked together last weekend to organize the hauler and all the spare parts and it is very nice to be fully ready to go racing again. There was a race scheduled for sat at Tulare's Thunderbowl speedway and we left at 6 A M in order to make such a long trip in time. At 9:30 AM the cell phone rang with bad news of a cancellation that night because of rain! We were already up to Pyamid Lake north of LA when we got the word. I thank Dave Quigley for calling as we were rolling and would have there with time to spare. Now my mind was searching for any track running Dwarfs and lucky for us Ventura was running Dwarf cars and we turned around and headed that direction. We arrived at 12:00 but the wind was blowing at least 40mph steady! I knew from experience that the track would be very dry tonight. We rolled out the ZX1200 car because it is better for little tracks where lots of torque is needed. I started 3 rows back in the heat race and was moving up very nicely and going for the lead when Sean Crawford decided to punt me ,spin me out and ruin my rear wheel. I was not happy and made it clear to him I was not. The main event found me 4 rows back outside on the slickest track I had seen since last year's Pahrump Nationals. I knew tonight would be about throttle control. Brent Stevens went from 6th to 1st on the first lap with some great driveling and I was close behind and in 3rd by the end of the second lap. I passed that car next and it was Brent and I 1-2. He held the bottom line but I could see he was loose off the corner and was going into the corner slower than I was so I just moved up one lane and passed him for the lead on lap 5. I led every lap after to win my 34th main event and I only turned 9800 rpm as I was very easy on the throttle. The ride home is always better after winning and I was happy to have a crew that is excited about racing again. I thanked my car builder Mr Ed of EEE and dedicated the win to a friend of mine, Jeff Mitchell, who died unexpectedly last sunday at the young age of 46. God bless him and his family. Our team will travel to Pahrump,Nevada this thursday to race at the first round of the 2005 Nationals.
It has been entirely too long since I have written any racing stories and for my fans I apologize. Last year found Scrib's Racing only going to a few races as my wife and I prepared for the arrival of our son Anthony James. 2004 started off very well as I took my Brand new EEE 34 Ford sedan to Ventura opening night and won the heat race and main event! I then had a very good 6th place finish at Pahrump in April at the first round of the Nationals . From there we were off to Chowchilla for the second round of the National series and I really think I had the car to beat but on Friday nights action I was run into from behind taking me and the car out for the night. I pulled out the backup car for Saturday's races and was doing very well leading the B main when the car started cutting out and misfiring. I was able to transfer into the A main only to have to pull out of the race. As It turns out the alternator died leaving my electronic fuel injected car dead .My National points run took a big hit as I was scored 22nd and for the first time in 4 years outside the top ten. As the year went on all of my good friends were racing at Barona Speedway and because both Eddie Morris and Marc Teixeira were prepping the racetrack the racing surface was as good as ever gets producing some of the best racing you could ever want. On any given night 6 or 7 drivers could win . With drivers like Eddie Morris,Marc Teixeira, Bobby Brown Telly Philo,Phil Teixeira,Myself and both the Drake brothers there was some real competition right here in town. I made just three of the races at Barona but must say left quite an impression. On the first race I raced to the lead and led the most laps only to make one mistake and lose the race to one of those guys mentioned. With the group of guys that are racing there now one mistake is one too many. The second race found me again in the lead only to make ONE MORE mistake and lost two spots to finish 3rd! The 3rd race I attended was a memorial race for our late friend # 28 Brian Truax. He died unexpectedly and will be missed. The Truax family put up a large purse for a 10 lap fast dash that featured only the heat winners and first losers. We pulled playing cards on the front stretch to determine our running order. I pulled outside pole and never looked back as I SMOKED all others to win $400. I had not lost a heat race all year in the EEE car and this was just another win for Scrib's racing. The main event was a 30 lapper and I led every lap to win my 33rd main event and the $600 that went with it. The very next weekend was the season finally and because I won the week before I was started in the 12th starting spot. This would be costly as I crashed into Phil Teixeira when he spun in front of me on the 2nd lap and tore the right front of my car right off the car. End of the race and season. Mr Ed of EEE racing had one chassis left of the last batch of cars he had built and offered it two me in case I wanted a spare. I already had two cars but one was the car I had purchased from Tom Smith two years earlier and was probably a good time move to another new one. I bought that chassis from EEE and commissioned Ed to build me a 2005 car and this time I wanted to try out a new engine that just became available. It was the new ZX10 ,45 lbs lighter than the zx12 I was already running and 5 more HP! Over the winter Mr Ed worked on my car and delivered me a brand new 2005 EEE 34 Ford sedan that only weighed in at 996lbs. That is a full 75 lbs lighter than the car I was racing! Mr Ed outdid himself on my car as he hand built every part for my car. It is the MOST BEAUTIFULL car I have ever owned. The detail is unsurpassed and could not be any better. The real test however is under racing conditions against other fast guys and this past weekend saw 41 cars show up at Canyon Raceway for the first regional of the year. Mr Ed came with Eddie Morris and his very loyal pit crew Tim Mould. Ronny Dunlap came over with his brother and I showed up with my wife and new son Anthony. That was hit and miss as far as help went because we all know the baby comes first. I found myself doing all the duties that my longtime crew Terry and Russell Jones would normally do but would like to thank my EEE teammates for their help in my times of need. Even Kyle Morris,Eddie's son was very helpful . For all the teams help I thank you guys. Weds night was only practice night but Eddie and I took the practice very seriously as we were both in brand new cars. Mr Ed's car runs a very healthy Honda Blackbird 1237cc engine and mine was a bone stock zx1000. That little motor is the motor that could! I was so impressed by the power of that little motor I could not tell it was not 1200cc. Race day finally arrived and I pulled a terrible pill that started me dead last in a very fast heat. I only managed a 3rd place finish that put me in the B main event. Eddie went on to win his heat starting him in the A main right away. I ran right to the front of the B main and was challenged for that spot the whole race! Nick Bruce in another zx10 car was as fast as I was and gave one heck of a race . He managed to slide job me for the win on the last lap and that really hurt even though I probably had more fun racing him so hard than most races I have been in. I started 14th in the A main Friday night and top ten is the goal. Only top ten are locked in to Saturday night's A main . All others will start over on Sat to fill in behind the top ten I managed a 9ih place finish as I was loose and was hanging on. Eddie started 6th but went too loose and fell back of top ten. The top ten drivers then pull pills for a ten lap dash that sets the starting order for Sat Nights big race. With my 9th place finish I was not getting a very good shot at the front as most of the time the # 1 pill is picked early. Not Tonight! The # 1 pill was mine and I took advantage of it by leading every lap of the dash and winning $250 for the race. That is my 3rd top ten dash win and they are very precious and hard to win. This started me on pole for the big money race. I fell in behind Nick Bruce on the start as he had the high line. We raced 1-2 for about ten laps when Ryan Cotrell got by to take 2nd. He was fast as he put a lot of pressure on the leader Nick. On a restart about half way I think Ryan hit the back of Nick turning him sideways right in front of me and causing a ten car pileup. He later blamed me for his spin but I really never touched him to cause his spin and I barely avoided the wall to miss him. I was now back in 2nd and hanging tough when out of nowhere came Brad Hickson to pass me and the leader and go on to win the race .I had my hands full with always fast Dean Riggs as he and I went side by side for 5 laps. Dean got me on the last lap to take away my 3rd so I finished 4th with Eddie coming from the back to get 5th. All in all a very good regional for both Eddie and I.
